"Being 'differently-abled' should not define or limit children"
Dear Young Differently-Abled Girl is a poetic letter penned to children, affirming them in their differences that make them unique.
Inspired by the true story of Nathalie Calderon, a life-long amputee who struggled with self-acceptance growing up in an able-bodied world. She strived to be like all the other kids, hiding her disability for fear of others judgement. She unknowingly developed a critical inner voice dubbed, "Negative Gnat", which plagued the thoughts and beliefs about her self-worth, abilities, physical disability, and body through her adulthood.
This children's book stemmed from an empowering letter that Nathalie wrote to her younger self as an adult, filled with the words of validation, understanding and affirmations she needed to hear (and believe) at a young age.
Dear Young Differently-Abled Girl is a manifestation of this letter, pouring into other young girls to help them build self-love and self-esteem within themselves.
